In this blog, I wanted to spotlight the health benefits of rhubarb.
I don’t know about you, but I love rhubarb. It is always one of the first things to come up in my perennial garden and reminds me of growing up. My Mom always had rhubarb in her garden and my brothers and sister would look forward to her tasty rhubarb crunch and pie in the spring and early summer. Although rhubarb has a tart taste when eaten raw, it can be a sweet treat, when prepared with the right ingredients. Many people pair strawberries with rhubarb to get a delicious sweet and tart combination. Besides having a delightful taste, rhubarb contains quite a number of beneficial nutrients, which your body needs to function properly. Like celery, rhubarb grows in stalk and is rich in fiber and antioxidants. Some nutrients found in rhubarb include vitamin C, vitamin K, vitamin B, manganese, magnesium and calcium. Rhubarb has numerous other health benefits, as well.

Aids In digestion
Since rhubarb has a high fiber content, rhubarb can help your body maintain a healthy digestive system, as it helps bulk things up. Dietary fiber is important for overall health, so it is imperative that you include plenty of fiber-rich foods in your diet. It has been shown that rhubarb has a powerful effect relieving digestive issues such as bloating, constipation and cramping. Rhubarb is also beneficial for cancer prevention.
Weight Loss
Rhubarb is low in calories and rich in fiber. That is why it is a good food to eat for weight loss. Rhubarb helps fill you up and has a minimal caloric content. Studies also show that it may help speed up the bodies metabolism, so feel free to munch on this stalky food to help keep you going.
Blood Circulation
Rhubarb contains both copper and iron, which help in the production of red blood cells and oxygenation of blood. Iron is important mineral your body needs to produce hemoglobin, which helps carry oxygen throughout your body. It is also needed for brain functioning, immune system response and muscle, skin and hair growth.
Strengthens Bones
Rhubarb has been shown to help aid in the prevention of osteoporosis. That’s because rhubarb is rich in vitamin K, which helps stimulate bone growth and repair. It also contains a high amount of calcium and other minerals that protect and help build strong bones.
